The immune system and vegetarian diet
It is often difficult to do research on topics such as the common cold, flu, and other ailments in regards to the impact that dietary changes or supplementation may have on these. Numerous studies have indicated that vegetarians have lower incidences of contracting common colds, the flu, and other transmittable viruses. The hypothesis is that a vegetarian diet creates a stringer immune system that is better able to fight viruses. Personally, I have been sick one time in the last nine years. I am continually amazed that being around people with the flu all winter, I never contracted it. Recent research showed that children get sick and average of 3-5 times per year. My son has been sick one time in the last four years. During a recent dinner at our house, the topic of colds and flu came up. Everyone in attendance was vegetarian. Each individual recalled getting a cold or flu no more that one time in four years. Obviously, a plant-based diet can make a significant impact on our daily health and long term health.
